Propane Safety
Here are some tips to keep you safe while while transporting and using your propane
General Safety Tips
- Don’t use or store your propane cylinder in your basement or living space
- Make sure your propane cylinder is securely fastened outside, and is unlikely to be affected by weather conditions
- Contact a qualified propane service retailer to connect your cylinder to your appliance
Appliances
- Do not use propane gas BBQ grills inside
- Heating your home by using your propane powered cooker, stove, or oventop is NOT recommended
- Do not use portable electric generators indoors – keep them outside of your building
- Have a qualified person perform a leak test for maximum safetyg
If you smell gas...
- Immediately extinguish all smoking materials and open flames
- Get everyone out of the area where you suspect the gas is leaking
- Turn off the gas supply valve of your propane tank if it is safe to do so
- Once away from the leak, contact your propane supplier. If you can’t reach them, call 911
- Do not return to the area until your propane retailer, emergency responder, or qualified service technician determines it is safe to do so
- Get your system checked. Before you attempt to use any of your propane appliances, your propane retailer or a qualified service technician must check your entire system to ensure that it is leak-free.
Transporting your propane cylinder
- Transport your propane cylinder in an upright and secure position. Never allow cylinder to be bounced around.
- No smoking should be allowed in the vehicle while your cylinder is on yoru vehicle.
- The maximum number of cylinders that can be transported is four (4).
- Remove the cylinder from the vehicle as soon as possible after transporting.
